There was a time, mainly pre-WWII that our communities Main Streets were the towns economic and social engines. The buildings in our downtowns were well kept and full of main floor retail business and second floor apartments, lodges, or offices.
In most cases around the county this is just not the case today. As highways improved it made it easer for people to travel longer distances for work, shopping and entertainment. “Roads that once connected neighborhoods to the downtown now take people elsewhere.” Downtown business closed, buildings where neglected and boarded up. Long gone were the Saturday night trips to town for dinner and shopping or a movie.
Our Main Street Greene County Event will Celebrate those days, and our public spaces in a manner never before seen in Greene County. This year we are combining our popular fall history booklet, now in its seventh year, with quick response codes (QR CODES) dispersed around the county main streets. This years event participant will be able to purchase our full color history booklet for only $1 at many local Main Street Business.
Our Main Street Greene County Book will be complete with full sized historic pictures of our counties Main Streets, local oral history stories, and a county map linked to a special Google Map to locate QR Codes along a Main Street History Trail. |
