Off Highway 67 in Carrollton take Cemetery Road East. At stop sign turn North Barn will be on West side of Road

Thomas Purl was born in Pennsylvania in 1813 he married Violet Jones of Wayne County Indiana and moved to Greene County in 1853 where they engaged in farming.

The Purls had several children. Youngest daughter Alice married R.P. Driver. Alice inherited considerable land from her father’s estate including the property this barn was built upon. It is unknown if the barn was built by Thomas and Violet or by R.P. and Alice. We do believe it to have been built in the last quarter of the 19th centaury. The barn did belong to the brick Purl House South-West across the field. The house adjoining the barn was built later.

The Purl-Caselton Barn is of timber Frame Construction with mortise and tenon pegged joints.

Three louvered porthole windows grace the front of this massive barn. This barn is topped off with a hip roofed cupola with arched topped ventilators.  The arch top window is another trade mark of Joe Minch and can be found on many of his early barns.

The Purl– Caselton Barn Quilt is sponsored by Thomas H. Piper Attorney at Law, White Hall
