This Place MAtters

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has introduced a new program that will bring attention to the places that matter most to our local communities. The goal of this program is to allow our neighbors to see the places that matter most to us. The Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association is taking an active role and we are asking for your help. The idea is simple. Have your picture taken holding a sign in front of the place that matters most to you.  We have already featured the Eldred House, the Alms House, the Fernwood Mausoleum and the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society. If you want to become a part of history today, then send your pictures to thisplacematters@eldredhouse.com and they will be featured on our website and possibly in later publications. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to see the places that matter most to you!

Greene County Alms House

The James J Eldred House matters most to Carolyn McCarry.  Secretary of the Illinois valley Cultural Heritage since they received the house in 1995, Carolyn has a special attachment to this 1861 16 room limestone house.

Circa 1914 the Fernwood Mausoleum was built as a for profit venture by the Greene County Mausoleum Company.  This company is known to have built two other identical structures here in Illinois. Built to hold 200, there is now less than 100 people entombed.  Over the years the building has suffered from neglect. Mark Brown nominated the Fernwood Mausoleum as a place that matters most to him.
